A Guide To The Best Portable Chargers

A portable charger also known as a power bank is an extremely handy and useful device which can be used to charge devices such as: Apple & android smart phones, tablets, bluetooth speakers, 3D drawing pens and other USB devices.

In our guide on top tips for long distance driving, we recommend always bringing a portable power bank with you.  As we all know we can’t rely on the battery to last on our electronic devices, therefore a portable charger is the perfect solution.

Our top 10 portable chargers table shown above shows you what features are included, the best portable charger for you would really depend on how many devices you usually carry around with you.  Some of the portable chargers has a large power capacity and can charge multiple devices simultaneously, therefore if you carry around a smartphone and tablet then you may want to choose a portable charger which offers more power.

The output speed is measured in amps, this is how quick the portable charger can supply power to your device, so if the number is higher then it’ll charge your device quicker.  The input is how it takes to charge the actual portable charger itself.

How To Choose The Best Portable Charger

Many people will buy a portable power bank charger for holiday, don’t wait until you get to the airport to buy one as you’ll be limited to very basic overpriced models.  As you’ll probably make good use out of your portable power charger, it’s important you buy the right model.

Below is the list of features which you may need to take into account when picking the best portable charger.

Compatibility – Can be used for pretty much any device that can be charged via USB.

Capacity – This is the maximum power the power bank can hold when it’s fully charged.  To give you an idea, the iPhone 6 has a capacity of 1810mAh, that means if a power bank has a capacity of 20,000mAh it can charge an iPhone 6 around 12 times!

Total output 4.5A, one port has an output of 2.4A and the other 2.1A

Output – A higher output means more power can be transmitted from the portable charger to your devices at a quicker speed.  Pay attention though because if a charger has an output of say 3.1A and has 3 USB ports, this would usually be the total output for the 3 USB ports.  Therefore each port may only roughly have around a 1A output.

On the other hand, the RAVPower 16750mAh has an output of 4.5A and only has 2 USB ports.  One port has a 2.4A output and the other is 2.1A, so the output speed for each individual port would be a lot quicker than the example we mentioned above.

Input – The input would refer to the speed at which the portable power bank charges at, however it’ll also depend on how large the capacity is.

USB ports – Basically however many USB ports there are, this means you can charge this many devices simultaneously.

Power bank charge time – How long it takes for the charger to fully recharge based on it being empty.  The recharge time does also depend on how you’re charging it, if you use your laptop to recharge it, it’ll usually take longer whereas if you use a USB wall charger it’ll charge quicker.

Power checker – Tells you how much power is remaining, handy to know as you won’t know whether you’ll need to recharge your power bank before you head out.

LED flashlight – Useful flashlight that might come in handy but it’s not as powerful as a solar powered power bank.

Dimensions/weight – Some power banks can be quite bulky and heavy but they usually have the largest capacity, although many newer models are now smaller and lighter and still have a decent capacity size.

After analysing and researching each individual portable charger, we’ve compiled that information into an easy to read top 10 best portable chargers table.  The ratings are based on:

Price – Does the functions of the portable charger justify the price?

Features  – What functions does the portable charger offer?
