A Guide To The Best 3D Drawing Pens For Kids

3d-drawings

Be as creative as you like!

One of the coolest more recent gadgets to have made its mark on the scene is the 3D drawing pen aka 3D printing pen or 3D doodle pen.  This cool pen allows you to make your drawings become three-dimensional, as you can draw on surfaces and in the air.

The 3D drawing pen works by heating a plastic filament which is its form of ink, it then gets heated up and pushed through the tip of the pen, the plastic then cools down rapidly and hardens into whatever shape you choose to draw.

Not only is it fun but it also allows kids to become more creative and artistic, and it’s not only limited to kids who can use this pen.  If you’re already familiar with how this pen works then you can compare the top 5 best 3D drawing pens for kids with our table above, if not then see below on how to choose the best and most suitable one.

How To Choose The Best 3D Drawing Pen

When deciding what’s the best 3D drawing pen for kids or for yourself, you’re spoilt for choice as there are so many options to choose from.  This can be a good and a bad thing, the good thing is you have many options available but the bad thing is there are so many 3D pens which have similar features you don’t know what one is good and what one is not.

Fortunately the fierce level of competition has brought the average price down so you can get a good cheap 3d drawing pen.  To help you pick out the best 3D pen, we’ll go through the list of features they can offer so you can decide if you prefer a pen with or without that feature included.

LCD screen – Having a screen will tell you what’s the current temperature inside the pen but it wouldn’t make much difference without a screen.

USB connection allows you to plug it into a power bank

Speed control – Allows you to adjust the extrusion speed which will give you more control.

Power source – The two ways 3D pens are powered are either by USB or mains or a combination of both.  Being powered by USB offers a lot more flexibility and portability as you can still plug it into a USB plug like you do with your mobile phone or you can plug it into a laptop or power bank and draw from anywhere.  If it’s powered by mains then you’ll have to be near a plug socket at all times.

Cordless – There are only very few models that have a built-in rechargeable battery so it can operate without being connected to a power source.  Having a cordless 3D pen will allow you to draw from anywhere without having the wire get in your way.  The next best option in terms of portability would be having a pen that’s USB powered so you can use it with a power bank as mentioned above.

Filaments supplied – If any filaments are supplied then you can get started right away!  There are two main filament types which you can see below.

Auto power off/sleep mode – A safety feature which will either shut the power off or put the pen into sleep mode if it hasn’t been used for a set time or if it’s been used for too long so it doesn’t overheat.

How To Refill A 3D Printer Pen

3D printer pens use filament which is plastic material that gets heated up and then pushed through the tip of the pen.  There are two main types of filament that the pens use:

ABS filament – More durable and stronger, has a higher temperature resistance and starts to melt at 356°F.  ABS filament refills will come with a mixture of colours.

PLA filament – Biodegradable and comes from plant based origins making it more environmentally friendly.  Begins to melt at 320°F.  PLA filament refills are a fraction more expensive but will also come with a mixture of colours.

The pens in the table which use ABS or PLA filament have a diameter of 1.75mm which the refills shown above are suitable for.  Some 3D printing pens such as the 3Doodler use its own filament type, this will be made by the manufacturers themselves.  However, you may need to take into account 3Doodler ABS Plastic will probably cost more than standard filament.
