A Guide To The Best Electric Under Blankets

Warm up your bed on those cold chilly nights, an electric under blanket can warm up your bed in minutes so it’s all ready for you when you hop under the duvet.  Not to be confused with electric over blankets, an electric under blanket also referred to as a heated under blanket goes on top of the mattress, then the bed sheet goes over the heated under blanket.

You can get good cheap electric under blankets for less than £20 but high end models can cost over £70, of course it depends on the size you buy as well.  It doesn’t cost much money to run either, it can be as little as 2 pence a night which is much cheaper than using a radiator.  An electric under blanket is also a great cheap way to keep warm in winter!

Although an electric heated under blanket keeps you very warm whilst you’re in bed, it can’t be used anywhere else!  Which brings us to our next point, if you want to stay warm not just in bed, then consider a heated foot warmer which is perfect for lounging around the house.

How To Choose The Best Electric Under Blanket

There are some premium features only some models will have which also usually cost more to have such features.  Below we’ll go through a list of all the features and what it does so you can decide what features you require.

Sizes – Some models will have sizes for single, double and king size beds, whereas some companies might only make a particular model in king size.

Fabric – The most common material used are polyester or fleece, fleece is a lot thicker and will keep you warmer.

Number of heat settings – Allows you to control how warm you want your bed to be, although when sleeping it is recommended that you use the lowest heat setting.

Remote control – This is used to control and change any settings on the heated under blanket.

timer-switch

Plug the electric under blanket socket in a timer switch to set the time you want the electric blanket to be turned off

Dual heating control – Each half of the heated under blanket is controlled by a separate remote control, so you don’t have to have the same heat setting as your partner.

Heat Control For Body & Feet – Only a few of the electric under blankets will have this feature, it basically has separate controls for your body and for your feet.  So you can choose a different heat setting for your feet and a different one for your body too.

Timer – Having a timer function allows you to set the timer so it turns off either shortly after you’ve fallen asleep or half way through the night.  For models without a built-in timer you can instead plug the electric blanket into a timer switch which will stop power flowing at the time you set it for.

Detachable heating cord – In order to wash the blanket you’ll have to detach any electrical cords which all models will allow you to do.

Fitting – Many of the under blankets will have a corner ties so you can securely tie it to each corner of your bed.  Some will be fully fitted which actually fits over your entire mattress just like a bed sheet would, but this type of fitting tends to cost more as it usually covers a much larger surface area.

Machine washable – Although you place a bed sheet over the electric under blanket, it can still get dirty just like how your bed sheet would, therefore will need to be washed.  Fortunately the blankets can be machine washed which makes it more convenient and hygienic.
